Welcome to Waterproof Fabric! Whether you are searching for waterproof jacket or a waterproof
car cover, you’ll find relevant information on this matter that I hope will help you when choosing one. There are
many uses for waterproof fabrics: using in sports where you might get wet or face several rainy and/or snowy
conditions (like snowboarding!), to guard and protect your outdoor furniture, to protect your car that will be
outdoor for a long time, etc. I’m sure you find a use for one.
Waterproof Fabric vs Water resistant fabric
First thing I need to clarify is that waterproof is not the same as water resistant and why you should know
this. Though it does look like the same thing, they are not: waterproof means that no water whatsoever is able to
get in a specific fabric or whatever thing that has a “waterproof” label on it. On the other hand, water resistant
means that it does help preventing water getting where you do not want to, but STILL some water WILL get there,
thus the name water resistant since it only resists partially to the rain or something similar.
Waterproof Fabric
Waterproof fabric has different measures and tests in order to clarify and evaluate how
resistant that fabric is. For a waterproof jacket for example, they have several tests with different kind of
scenarios to test and rank different jackets. Then, this jackets gets ranking based on how much millimeters of
water they can resist. I could not find a good list to post here so you can see how much “waterproof”
your waterproof jackets or waterproof watches must be. But as a general rule, 20.000 millimeters for
example for a outdoor waterproof fabric, is quite a high
standard and it will probably be quite expensive. 5.000 to 10.000 millimeters are more commonly found.
Just bear in mind that these metrics are not 100% accurate and they hardly will. Think about for a minute how
they test it in a lab, with a tank or whatever. This type of pressure testing on a waterproof fabrics, is
useful to evaluate and compare different options on a waterproof jacket for example, but if a ziplock has
a problem, then it doesn’t matter if the waterproof is 500.000 resistant since you will get anyway!
Breathability Test On A Waterproof Fabric
In this video, there is a short demonstration on how important is the quality of your fabric when choosing the
right waterproof fabric for you. Check out the video, it is only 1:56 minutes long but it is quite
entertaining to watch. You won't be able to test like that in every single water resistant fabric that you decide
to buy, but it might be a good idea to keep this in mind since breathability might be something important, Imagine
yourself taking long walks without having a proper waterproof jacket or waterproof shoe that allows your body to
fully breathe and thus, cooling it down so you can keep walking for a longer time. It does make a big
difference!
